Summary of Event: The inaugural Sustainable Finance Week (SFW) is intended to bring together players from the “sustainable finance community” to discuss the interaction of environmental, social and financial challenges. The week will feature events such as: “Natural Capital Declaration”; “China – Africa Sustainable Banking Dialogue”; “Managing Social and Environmental Risk”; and a “Leaders Dialogue.” The 14th Global Roundtable (GRT), a biennial event of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), an agency of United Nations (UN) that coordinates the environmental activities of the UN, Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), that assembles representatives from financial institutions, governments, regulators, civil society, academia and the scientific community to support sustainable finance, will be held as part of SFW on November 12 – 13. The theme for the 2013 GRT is “Financing the Future We Want: China, Emerging Markets and the World Economy.”

Background on Organizer: The UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a partnership among UNEP and members of global financial sector that works to understand the impact of environmental factors and “social considerations” on financial performance. UNEP was established in 1972 as a product of a United Nations conference on the environment. The mission of UNEP is “to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.” It works with international organizations, government, the private sector and civil society to protect natural resources worldwide.
