MICROCAPITAL EVENT: Women Advancing Microfinance of New York hosts speaker Chagit Rubinstein of the Koret Israel Economic Development Funds (KIEDF) and SAWA

DECEMBER 4, 2008, NEW YORK CITY, USA

The New York chapter of Women Advancing Microfinance (WAM-NY), an international organization dedicated to advancing and supporting women in microfinance, will hold the next installment of its Voices from the Field series: “Microfinance in Israel: Supporting Bedouin Women.”  Chagit Rubinstein will speak about her experiences with two key players in Israeli microfinance—Koret Israel Economic Development Funds (KIEDF) and SAWA microfinance institution—from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at the Microsoft Center located at 1290 Avenue of the Americas, 6th Floor, Studio 54.  Ms. Rubinstein will discuss how and why SAWA has enabled Bedouin women to become micro-entrepreneurs, KIEDF’s challenges in Israel, and the future prospects for Israeli microfinance.

In 2005, Chagit Rubinstein joined Koret Israel Economic Development Funds (KIEDF) as Director of the new KIEDF Microenterprise Initiative, which guarantees loans of up to USD 5,000 to economically disadvantaged Israelis seeking to establish home-based and other small businesses.  She also serves as the Program Director of the KIEDF-funded SAWA microfinance program, which has provided 520 loans totaling USD 500,000 to the Bedouin women of Israel.  Ms. Rubinstein earned an MBA from INSEAD in France in 1990 and has worked for ten years as a marketing manager for Israeli exporters.  In 2000, she won a Hubert Humphrey Fellowship to study microfinance at American University in Washington, DC.  Prior to joining KIEDF, Ms. Rubinstein co-founded Economic Empowerment for Women (EEW)—another Israeli microfinance institution.

Due to building restrictions, WAM-NY asks all attendees to RSVP with their name, company name, email, and phone number to wamnewyork@yahoo.com by December 1st.  The program is free for WAM-NY members, but all others must pay USD 10.
