Summary of Event:

The MicroInsurance Summit 2010 has three goals: to evaluate strategies for delivery, partner-agent models and scalability; to discuss methods of achieving the dual goal of positive social impact and long-term commercial results; and to assess the roles of key stakeholders, including donors, regulators, governments, insurers and reinsurers, and technical assistance providers.

Participants will analyze case studies of successful microinsurance schemes, the market landscape, distribution models, effective marketing tactics and ways to educate low-income clients to increase insurance literacy.

Background on Organizer(s):

Conference coordinator Hanson Wade organized this event. Official partners include MicroCapital, MicroEnsure, Microfinance Insights, Planet Guarantee, Guy Carpenter and GC Micro.

MicroEnsure, an insurance intermediary founded in 2005, provides a range of low-cost products including health, life, property and weather index-based insurance to over 3.5 million poor clients across six countries: Ghana, India, the Philippines, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.

PlaNet Guarantee is the unit of the PlaNet Finance Group dedicated to microinsurance. PlaNet Guarantee engages in the promotion of microinsurance by producing market studies, providing training, prevention studies and risk analysis, designing insurance products and managing insurance subscriptions and provisions.

Based in New York, Guy Carpenter is a reinsurance company with 20 US offices and 30 international offices, employing 2,600 brokers worldwide. In February 2009, Guy Carpenter was awarded a grant (of undeclared amount) by the Microinsurance Innovation Facility to develop a microreinsurance risk-pooling facility to provide risk transfer solutions to support microfinance institutions’ (MFIs’) operations. The goal of the facility is to structure effective and profitable reinsurance products for microinsurers.
