Summary of Event:

The Microfinance India Summit, an international conference on Indian microfinance, serves as a platform for promoting and sharing experiences of the Indian microfinance sector with the global community. It aims to bridge the gap between models and methodologies and helps build consensus on the critical challenges and issues plaguing the sector. Currently in its sixth year, with the first conference dating back to 2004, it attracts microfinance policy makers, practitioners, promoters, academicians, researchers and thought leaders to share their experiences and facilitates learning of international trends and best practices for adaptation by the Indian community of practitioners [1].

Event Theme and Topics:

The theme for this year’s summit is “Doing Good and Doing Well: The need for balance”. Aligned to its theme, the summit will look at both the trade-offs and points of convergence as the microfinance sector copes to balance between building the social as well as the financial capital; scale and soul; social performance measurement; client protection; products and services that the poor need; and issues linked to last-mile connectivity, among others. The summit will seek to draw diverse perspectives on these future focuses of the microfinance sector. In addition, the “Microfinance India- State of the Sector Report” 2009 will also be released during the summit. State of the Sector reports for the years 2006, 2007 and 2008 can be accessed here.

The complete agenda is currently unavailable; however as per information currently available, the third day of the three-day event will be observed as ‘Livelihoods Day’ dedicated to issues linked to the sustainable livelihoods of the poor. Stakeholders are expected to share experiences and build a consensus around possible future strategies that will deliver composite and durable solutions. In addition, a separate “State of India’s Livelihoods-The 4 P Report” will be released on Day Three, bringing together diverse experiences from the livelihoods sector. The report would analyze current challenges, scan the policy environment, assess new opportunities for the poor and also help to forecast trends.
