    Summary of Event: The HBS-ACCION Program on Strategic Leadership in Microfinance offers finance leaders from around the world an opportunity to connect with peers while engaging with some of Harvard Business School’s foremost thinkers in business strategy and management.

    Background on Organizer: ACCION International is a private, US-based nonprofit organization with the mission of alleviating poverty by providing financial products, such as microenterprise loans, business training and other financial services to its clients. ACCION was founded in 1961 and issued its first microloan in 1973 in Brazil. ACCION’s partner microfinance institutions provide loans to men and women entrepreneurs in 23 countries in Latin America, Asia, Africa and the United States. As of 2009, ACCION’s network serves 3.3 million active clients and reports an aggregate gross loan portfolio of USD 31.8 billion.

    Event Themes and Discussion Topics: The HBS-ACCION Program provides management and leadership training to microfinance industry executives. Participants will address issues including succeeding in highly competitive markets, maintaining a social focus in a commercial setting, working with equity investors, accessing commercial capital markets, reaching new business segments and evolving products.

    Who Is Invited to Attend: To be considered for admission to the program, you must be a senior executive of either a retail microfinance institution or a financial institution looking to engage in microfinance.
