Cost: USD 1,850 for 3 days; USD 2,000 for 5 days. Hotel, materials, lunches and field trips are included in tuition. Participants are responsible for travel to Senegal and dinner costs.

Summary of Event: Offered in the French language, this course is tailored for donors and investors who will benefit from a deeper understanding of microfinance to conduct their work more effectively. This course is primarily designed for project managers and investment officers making funding decisions on microfinance. At the heart of the teaching methodology are case studies and group work that are based on real‐life situations, allowing participants to learn in a creative and interactive method. Those staying for the short course (3 days) will receive a thorough overview of the fundamentals of microfinance. Participants attending the full course (5 days) will also benefit from sessions that lead up to the practical application of principles of good practice.

Another edition of the CGAP Course for Funders of Microfinance will be held in English in Nairobi, Kenya in fall 2011.

Background on Organizer: This course is provided by CGAP (Consultative Group to Assist the Poor), a policy and research center dedicated to encouraging the provision of financial access to poor people worldwide. CGAP is supported by approximately thirty development agencies and private foundations. Its mission is to provide market intelligence, to promote standards and to offer advisory services to governments, microfinance providers, donors and investors.

Themes and Discussion Topics: During the short course (3 days) participants will gain a broad overview of microfinance, including the following topics:
– What is a Financial Systems Approach?
– Clients at the Center: Why is Access to Financial Services Important?
– Understanding the Financial Market at Micro, Meso and Macro Levels
– Financial System Gap Analysis Framework
– Other Current Issues in Microfinance

During the full course (5 days) participants will apply skills and knowledge learned during the first three days to assess a funding request case study. Specific topics covered will include:
– What Constitutes Appropriate Roles of Funders and Factors for Effective Involvement?
– Micro, Meso and Macro Level Project Assessment
– Making a Funding Decision: Comparative Advantage, Instruments and Collaboration
– How to Structure Monitoring and Reporting
