MICROCAPITAL EVENT: 2008 Economic Self-Reliance Conference

NOVEMBER 6-7, PROVO, UTAH

Brigham Young University (BYU) will host the 11th annual Economic Self-Reliance Conference this week in order to bring together social entrepreneurs to address domestic and international poverty and economic development by highlighting new research and practices that are gaining momentum domestically and abroad. The conference will be held at the Brigham Young University Conference Center. It is hoped that the conference will provide a forum for participants from various backgrounds to construct cross-disciplinary solutions to the complex problems of poverty and economic development.

Some of the workshops and seminars will focus on collaborations in the following areas: business, education, adult literacy, microcredit, microfranchising, ethnographic studies, technology and health. Others will focus on how to draw the combined support of people from different entities in the public and private sectors to increase the effectiveness of development organizations. John Hatch, the founder of FINCA international, will host a microcredit seminar on microfinance and its relationship to village banking. David Lehr of the Mercy Corporation and Elizabeth Berth from the Grameen Foundation will present a workshop on the systemization and replication of social ventures. A complete schedule is available here.

Participants must register by November 5 at the conference’s website or call (801) 422-8925. Participants must pay a registration fee of USD 185.
