MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Working Capital for Community Needs (WCCN) Loans $1.2m to Microfinance Operations of Pro Mujer in Nicaragua, Peru

Working Capital for Community Needs Incorporated (WCCN), a US-based nonprofit, has loaned the equivalent of USD 1.2 million in local currency to support the operations of microfinance institution (MFI) Pro Mujer in Nicaragua and Peru. WCCN lent the equivalent of USD 598,284 in local currency to Pro Mujer Nicaragua and the equivalent of USD 600,000 in local currency to Pro Mujer Peru. In addition to financial services, Pro Mujer provides healthcare and business training services.

As of December 2010, Pro Mujer Peru reported to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) USD 18.9 million in assets, a gross loan portfolio of USD 16.6 million, 50,606 active borrowers, return on assets 4.58 percent and return on equity 7.93 percent. Pro Mujer Nicaragua reported to MIX USD 8.7 million in assets, a gross loan portfolio of USD 6 million, 25,924 active borrowers, return on assets 5.6 percent and return on equity 8.67 percent. With administrative offices in Bolivia and New York, Pro Mujer also operates in Argentina and Mexico.

WCCN focuses on microfinance, fair trade, women’s empowerment and housing. WCCN’s Capital for Communities Fund (formerly known as the Nicaraguan Credit Alternatives Fund) provides institutions with loans ranging from USD 100,000 to USD 1 million. It reports to MIX fund assets of USD 9.5 million.
