MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: United States Nonprofit Global Partnerships Closes Social Investment Fund 2010, Will Invest $20m in Latin American Microfinance Institutions Over Five Years

Global Partnerships, a US-based nonprofit organization that supports microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Latin America, recently announced that it has closed Social Investment Fund 2010 (SIF 2010), its fourth social investment fund, at USD 20 million. Starting this month, Global Partnerships will invest in 20 MFIs in Latin America through the five-year debt fund. With SIF 2010, Global Partnerships has strengthened the social criteria for selection, requiring that the MFIs looking to receive investment prioritize sustainability, financial access for the rural poor and “microfinance plus” programs such as “preventive health services, business education, and assistance related to rural economic development” [1]. Investors in SIF 2010 include the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Overseas Private Investment Corp (OPIC), the Linked Foundation, the Perls Foundation, Seattle University, the Mercy Partnership Fund and 23 accredited individual investors.
