At the third annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting which recently took place at the University of Miami, Florida, students, universities and national youth organizations made commitments to implement solutions to global challenges worth approximately USD 42 million; several of the commitments are aimed at advancing microfinance efforts around the world.
The Intersect Fund, the Capital Good Fund and Elmseed Enterprise Fund committed to establish and support an alliance of student-led microfinance organizations and provide seed grants to create new groups. Kennedy Odede, a student from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, committed to establish the Women’s Microfinance Empowerment Project, which will promote sustainable farming practices. Lastly, in association with the Office of Genetic Counseling and Disabled Children in Hue City, Vietnam, An Thi Minh Vo, a student at Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts, committed to provide microloans of USD 212 to 35 families with children disabled by Agent Orange.
