MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Standard Chartered Bank of India Loans $5m to Indonesian Microfinance Institution (MFI) Mitra Bisnis Keluarga (MBK) Ventura

The Indian unit of UK-based commercial financial institution Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) recently notified MicroCapital that it has disbursed a loan of IDR 60 billion (USD 5 million) to Mitra Bisnis Keluarga (MBK) Ventura, a non-banking microfinance institution (MFI) founded in Indonesia in 2003. Additional information regarding the terms of the loan is not available.

As of September 30, 2012, MBK Ventura reported to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) total assets of USD 41.3 million, a gross loan portfolio of USD 34.1 million, return on assets (ROA) of 1.82 percent and return on equity (ROE) of 12.5 percent. As of December 12, 2012, MBK Ventura has approximately 329,000 active borrowers and does not accept deposits. For the year 2012, SCB reported total assets of USD 637 billion, return on equity of 12.8 percent and has financed USD 1 billion to various MFIs in Asia and Africa.
