MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Sierra Leone Association of Commercial Banks, Central Bank of Sierra Leone, Sasikom Capital Partner to Promote Financial Inclusion

The Sierra Leone Association of Commercial Banks (SLACB); the Central Bank of Sierra Leone (BSL, in French); and Sasikom Capital Partners, a private consulting firm, have created a partnership to promote financial inclusion in Sierra Leone through a national survey and public engagement campaign. The campaign intends to provoke dialogue about what financial inclusion means and how SLACB and BSL can increase it. The Governor of the Central Bank of Sierra Leone, Mr Sheku S Sesay, reportedly identifies financial inclusion as a major objective of BSL, recognizing that it remains “a challenge”.

The 13 microfinance institutions operating in Sierra Leone that reported data to the US-based nonprofit data provider Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) in 2011 held an aggregate gross loan portfolio of USD 4.3 million disbursed to approximately 33,000 borrowers.
