MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: responsAbility Lends $1.8m to Cambodian Microfinance Companies Angkor Mikroheranhvatho Kampuchea, Thaneakea Phum (Cambodia) Limited

Switzerland’s responsAbility Social Investments AG recently reported to MicroCapital that it has made local-curency loans equivalent to USD 1.8 million to Cambodian microfinance companies Angkor Mikroheranhvatho Kampuchea (AMK) and Thaneakea Phum (Cambodia) Limited. AMK received the equivalent of USD 1.31 million, USD 707,000 from the responsAbility Global Microfinance Fund (rAGMF) and USD 606,000 from the responsAbility Mikrofinanz-Fonds (rAMF). ResponsAbility invested USD 506,000 in Thaneakea Phum (Cambodia) Limited (TPC) through rAMF [1].

As of December 31, 2010, AMC reported to US-based nonprofit data provider Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) total assets of USD 43.9 million, gross loan portfolio of USD 31.7 million, return on assets (ROA) of 1.90 percent, return on equity (ROE) of 6.86 percent, and about 251,000 active borrowers. As of December 31, 2010, TPC reported to US-based nonprofit data provider Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) total assets of USD 31.7 million, return on assets (ROA) of 2.78 percent and return on equity (ROE) of 14.7 percent. As of September 30, 2011, it reported a gross loan portfolio of USD 29.2 million and 91,033 active borrowers.

About Angkor Mikroheranhvatho Kampuchea (AMK): Angkor Mikroheranhvatho Kampuchea (AMK) is a microfinance institution (MFI) located in Cambodia. It was originally founded in 1999 by Concern Worldwide, a charitable organization located in Ireland. It became an independent company in 2003 and was licensed as an MFI in 2004. It offers loans and was granted a deposit-taking license in February of 2010. In 2002, the initiative was incorporated as a limited liability company and given the name Thaneakea Phum (Cambodia) Limited. In 2003, TPC received its license from the National Bank of Cambodia to operate as an official microfinance institution. As of December 31, 2010, it reported to US-based nonprofit data provider Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) total assets of USD 31.7 million, return on assets (ROA) of 2.78 percent and return on equity (ROE) of 14.7 percent. In April 2011, its annual label was renewed by the Luxembourg Fund Labeling Agency (LuxFLAG), an organization that investigates whether investment vehicles actually support the microfinance sector. Mikrofinanz-Fonds reported to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) fund assets of USD 141 million in 2011.
