MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Pro Mujer Bolivia, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) Partner to Raise Awareness of Violence Against Women

Pro Mujer Bolivia, a branch of the US-based nonprofit Pro Mujer, recently secured unspecified support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ), the German Agency for Technical Cooperation, to raise awareness of violence against women among Pro Mujer employees. The plan includes workshops for Pro Mujer employees, including special training for employees who are victims of domestic violence. Increased incidents of femicide in Bolivia reportedly led Pro Mujer and GIZ to sign the agreement acknowledging that “there are plans of actions and laws to penalize, eradicate and prevent violence against women.” The training curriculum provided to Pro Mujer clients during repayment sessions will continue to address domestic violence. There will also be a media campaign throughout the country and organized public events such as group walks.

According to Pro Mujer’s 2011 annual report, it had a gross portfolio of USD 103 million, total client savings of USD 20.8 million and 254,307 active clients in five Latin American countries. For fiscal year 2010, GIZ conducted business valued at EUR 1.85 billion (USD 2.26 billion).
