MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) to Loan $20m to India-based Caspian Impact Investment (CII)

Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), a government-backed development finance institution based in the US capital of Washington, DC, recently agreed to loan USD 20 million to Caspian Impact Investments (CII), a fund launched in 2013 by Indian investment management and advisory services company Caspian Advisors Private Ltd. The loan will be used to support CII’s activities in India, which include providing debt capital to enterprises engaged in the affordable housing, food and agriculture, microfinance and small business lending sectors. Over the next 18 months, CII has plans to expand into other sectors including healthcare and livelihoods.

Elizabeth Littlefield, President and CEO of OPIC, stated, “Amid the excitement of a quickly-expanding economy, it is crucial to maintain growth that is inclusive of all people. The high-impact SMEs Caspian seeks to finance are exactly what’s needed to catalyze this type of balanced growth.”

As of 2015, CII has disbursed INR 1.4 billion (USD 22 million) to roughly 25 enterprises. As of September 2013, OPIC reported total assets of USD 8.5 billion, net income of USD 162 million, total commitments of USD 3.9 billion and active projects in 102 countries.
