MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Orange, Visa Partner to Enhance Orange Money Mobile Payment System in Botswana

Orange, a France-based telecommunications corporation, recently partnered with Visa Incorporated, a US-based payments technology company, to launch an enhanced system of mobile payment services for subscribers of Orange Money, Orange’s mobile money service, in Botswana. Orange Money customers currently can use their mobile phones to transfer funds to any mobile phone subscriber, buy airtime and pay bills. The new Orange and Visa partnership reportedly will enable Orange Money subscribers to perform transactions such as automated teller machine (ATM) withdrawals, point of sale (POS) and online purchases and invoice payments through a prepaid Visa card.

Subscribers can apply for the prepaid card, which will be linked to the subscriber’s existing Orange Money account and personal identification number (PIN). For online purchases, subscribers will receive a secured virtual Orange Money prepaid Visa card.

As of 2012, Visa reported total assets of USD 38.7 billion and net income of USD 2.14 billion. As of 2012, Orange reported total assets of EUR 89.9 billion (USD 119 billion) and annual revenue of EUR 43.5 billion (USD 57.6 billion). As of 2013, Orange has approximately 230 million customers worldwide.
