MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Orange, Banco Popular Dominicano Launch M-Peso Mobile Payment Service in the Dominican Republic

Orange Dominicana, subsidiary of Orange of France that offers prepaid mobile services in the Dominican Republic, and Banco Popular Dominicano, a commercial bank in the Dominican Republic, reportedly have launched the M-Peso mobile wallet and payment service in the Dominican Republic.  The new service will allow mobile customers to access bank accounts and credit cards, make payments, purchase airtime, pay bills, and transfer money to other Orange customers using their mobile phones.  GCS International, a Dominican Republic-based mobile payments systems provider, has designed and implemented the new service.  GCS International developed similar programs including tPago, a mobile banking service in the Dominican Republic, and Citi Mobile Collect, a mobile wallet offered by Citi Bank in the Dominican Republic.

Orange Dominicana has 3.4 million customers as of September 2013.  Its parent company, Orange, has 232 million customers and operates in 166 countries. In 2013, Orange was bought by Altice, a France-based telecommunications provider. Financial data on Orange Dominicana and Altice are not available.

As of December 2012, Banco Popular Dominicano holds total assets of USD 5.3 billion and total deposits of USD 4.5 billion.
