MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Oikocredit Invests $4.7m in Bolivian Microfinance Institutions (MFIs); CIDRE (Centro de Investigacion y Desarrollo Regional), CRECER (Credito con Educacion Rural), FUBODE (Bolivian Development Foundation) and Diaconia FRIF (Fondo Rotativo de Inversion y Fomento)

Oikocredit, a microfinance investment fund in the Netherlands with total assets of USD 665 million, recently loaned a total of USD 4.7 million to four Bolivian microfinance institutions (MFIs). CIDRE (Centro de Investigacion y Desarrollo Regional), microfinance institution (MFI) established in 1990 with USD 15.7 million in total assets, received USD 1.7 million. CRECER (Credito con Educacion Rural), an MFI established in 1990 with USD 51.2 million in total assets, received USD 1.5 million. FUBODE (Bolivian Development Foundation), an MFI established in 1997 with USD 35 million in total assets, received USD 500,000. Diaconia FRIF (Fondo Rotativo de Inversion y Fomento), an MFI established in 1991 with USD 35 million in total assets, received USD 1 million.

Oikocredit is a Dutch cooperative investment fund comprised of church groups, social support groups and individual investors. Established in 1975, it works in 70 countries worldwide, investing mainly in microfinance institutions (MFIs), as well as trade cooperatives, fair trade organizations and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the developing world. As of 2009 it had USD 665 million in total assets with 790 active investments, of which 543 were in MFIs.

CIDRE (Centro de Investigacion y Desarrollo Regional) is a Bolivian microfinance institution (MFI) that provides loans, insurance and money transfer services. It reports that 80 percent of its operations are in rural areas of Bolivia. According the MIX Market, the microfinance information clearinghouse, CIDRE had USD 15.7 million in total assets, a gross loan portfolio of USD 12.6 million, 2935 borrowers, 11 branches, 3.99 percent return on assets (ROA) and 12.97 percent return on equity (ROE) as of March 2010.

About CRECER (Credito con Educacion Rural):

CRECER (Credito con Educacion Rural) is a Bolivian microfinance institution (MFI) that was established in 1990. It provides loans, insurance and financial training and consulting. It provides its credit services to women in Bolivia. CRECER’s Credit with Education product is based on the village banking methodology. These village banks consist of savings and credit associations that are managed by a set of members with a common base of interests. According the MIX Market, the microfinance information clearinghouse, CRECER had USD 51.2 million in total assets, a gross loan portfolio of USD 45.3 million, 102,344 borrowers, 59 branches, 7.02 percent return on assets (ROA) and 18.95 percent return on equity (ROE) as of March 2010.

About FUBODE (Bolivian Development Foundation)

FUBODE (Bolivian Development Foundation) is a private nonprofit that was founded on 24 April 1997. Its main office is located in Cochabamba, Bolivia. It serves microentrepreneurs engaged in production, services, small industry and commerce. FUBODE provides loans, voluntary savings and fund transfer services. According to the MIX Market, the microfinance information clearinghouse, FUBODE had USD 9.65 million in total assets, a gross loan portfolio of USD 7.62 million, 15,038 borrowers, 13 branches, 3.57 percent return on assets (ROA) and 9.01 percent return on equity (ROE) as of March 2010.

About Diaconia FRIF (Fondo Rotativo de Inversion y Fomento):

Diaconia FRIF (Fondo Rotativo de Inversion y Fomento) is a Bolivian microfinance institution (MFI) that was established in 1991. It provides loans, insurance and fund transfer services. According the MIX Market, the microfinance information clearinghouse, Diaconia FRIF had USD 35 million in total assets, a gross loan portfolio of USD 33 million, 45,897 borrowers, 37 branches, 12.19 percent return on assets (ROA) and 16.87 percent return on equity (ROE) as of March 2010.
