Access Bank Ghana, an affiliate of Nigeria’s Access Bank Plc, recently partnered with the Netherlands Development Finance Company, a government-backed institution also known by its Dutch acronym FMO, to launch a Female Leadership Programme for entrepreneurs in Ghana. This initiative is part of the W Initiative, a women’s empowerment program of Access Bank that is facilitated by Better Future, a partner of FMO. The program includes workshops and one-on-one coaching for participating entrepreneurs.
Better Future is a social business with offices in India, the Netherlands and the US that offers leadership development services.
Established in 1989, Access Bank is a commercial bank providing institutional, commercial and retail banking services via 310 branches in nine African countries and the UK. The bank has three non-banking subsidiaries, United Securities Limited, Access Homes and Mortgages Limited, and Access Investment and Securities. In the year 2016, Access Bank had total assets of NGN 3.5 trillion (USD 11.1 billion), a gross loan portfolio of NGN 1.8 trillion (USD 5.7 billion) and deposits of NGN 2 trillion (USD 6.3 billion). The vision of FMO is to help abolish extreme poverty, increase equality and support measures that reduce climate change. It has total assets of EUR 8.5 billion (USD 9.5 billion) and profit before taxes of EUR 219 million (USD 245 million) for the year 2016. In 2014, FMO loaned Access Bank USD 40 million.
