MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Microsoft Donates $2.3m in Software Licenses to Pro Mujer for Computer Training

Microsoft, a US-based software company, has donated software licenses worth a total of USD 2.3 million to Pro Mujer, a US-based nonprofit that provides healthcare, training and financial services to women in Latin America. The donation will allow the organization to expand its computer training services from serving 270,000 women to reach approximately 328,000 women in low-income communities in Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru. Microsoft has been partnering with Pro Mujer since 2006 to provide women entrepreneurs and their families with free internet access and courses in Microsoft Office, a software package that includes word processing and other business applications.

As of year-end 2011, Pro Mujer held a gross loan portfolio of USD 103 million, deposits of USD 20.8 million and 254,307 active clients. Pro Mujer’s computer training courses have been offered to approximately 1.33 million women entrepreneurs and their relatives.

Pro Mujer, which was established in 1990, is a US-based nonprofit organization that provides healthcare, training and financial services in the following five countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru. Both financial and non-financial services are delivered through communal banks, or peer groups, of 20 to 30 women. As of Pro Mujer’s 2011 annual report, it had a gross portfolio of USD 103 million, deposits of USD 20.8 million and 254,307 active clients.
