Microfinance Information Exchange, a US-based, nonprofit data provider, recently drafted a paper entitled “Microfinance, Financial Crises, and Fluctuations in Food and Fuel Prices” that examines the potential impact of large-scale financial crises on the microfinance sector. The paper, the final version of which will be presented at the Global Microcredit Summit in Spain in November, addresses liquidity crunches, inflation in food and fuel prices, currency devaluations and more broadly, global recession. It aims to measure the resilience of MFIs during financial crises by analyzing factors such as rapid growth, market saturation, governance, systems and policies.
