MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Microfinance Council Established in Sudanese State of Khartoum

Sudanese governor Abdul Rahman reportedly announced the establishment of a Microfinance Council for the state of Khartoum, Sudan. The Council aims “to enable the micro-finance sector to play its role in achieving economic and social justice in the State.” The initiative is also designed to engage graduates in the microfinance sector; over 4,750 graduates are expected to participate in state-sponsored projects “such as agriculture, animal production and small scale businesses and industries” [1].

As of 2010, one microfinance institution has submitted data to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX). According to MIX, the Port Sudan Association for Small Enterprise Development (PASED), a Sudanese microfinance institution, has 3,969 active borrowers, total assets (GLP) of USD 1.7 million, a return on assets (ROA) of 1.48 percent, a return on equity (ROE) of 1.57 percent and a gross loan portfolio of USD 900,100.

About Microfinance Council of Khartoum, Sudan: Formally announced in 2012, the Microfinance Council of Khartoum, Sudan aims to increase development through microfinance and incorporate many of Sudan’s graduates in the sector. The council was created by the governor of Khartoum, Sudan, and the state’s Council of Ministers.

About the Port Sudan Association for Small Enterprise Development (PASED): Established in 2001, PASED is headquartered in Port Sudan, Sudan. PASED offers loans and voluntary savings products. As of December 31, 2010, it reported to US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) 3,969 active borrowers, a gross loan portfolio of USD 900,100, total assets (GLP) of USD 1.7 million, return on assets (ROA) of 1.48 percent and return on equity (ROE) of 1.57 percent.
