MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Mentors International Implements Mambu’s Cloud Banking Software to Support Lending to Small, Medium-sized Enterprises in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Philippines

Mentors International, a US-based nonprofit microfinance institution (MFI) that seeks to help poor people in developing countries become self-sufficient, recently has signed on to use the banking software of Mambu, a Germany-based technology company that offers cloud-based banking solutions. Mambu’s platform is expected to support Mentors International’s operations in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru and in the Philippines. Mentors International will also use Mambu’s open application program interfaces (APIs) to connect to “local payment systems”[1]. The mobile portion of the system offers offline functionality for use in areas without wireless connectivity or in case of network failures.

Mr Eugene Danilkis, the co-founder and CEO of Mambu, noted that “multinational microfinance networks stand to gain a lot by standardizing technology across their network. A cloud platform gives them real-time transparency into their network from donor level down to the social impact for every individual client”[1]. Mr Adriano Oliveira, the director of international operations of Mentors International stated that “with access to the Internet becoming ever more ubiquitous, Mambu’s cloud-based platform will improve our operational efficiency, enabling us to more easily demonstrate our social impact and improve financial transparency for our staff and our donor community”[1].

Mambu serves approximately 100 MFIs in 30 countries. Mentors International has seven foundations that collectively disbursed microloans totaling the equivalent of USD 60 million to approximately 3.3 million individuals between 1990 and 2013.
