MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Maruhan Japan Bank Acquires Equity Stake in Microfinance Institution Sathapana Limited of Cambodia

Maruhan Japan Bank, a Japanese financial institution with assets of USD 123 million as of 2011, recently has completed the acquisition of a stake in Sathapana Limited, a Cambodian microfinance institution (MFI). Neither the price nor the percentage of the stake has been disclosed [1]. Maruhan currently has partnerships with nine Cambodian MFIs to which it provides funding and management support [2].

For the year 2011, Sathapana reported to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) total assets of USD 108 million, a gross loan portfolio of USD 94.7 million, deposits of USD 38.9 million and approximately 57,000 active borrowers. Maruhan Japan Bank is a subsidiary of the Maruhan Corporation, which also operates in the food and gaming industries in Japan.
