MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Interest Rates and Microfinance Debated in “Does Micro Finance Alleviate Poverty? Borrowers Response” Seminar in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Rapport Bangladesh Limited (RBL), a professional management services organization, recently organized a seminar in Dhaka titled “Does Micro Finance Alleviate Poverty? Borrowers Response”. Dr Mohammad Haque of Monash University, Australia, who presented the keynote paper, argued that the effective interest rate he calculates is charged by microcredit banks, around 31 percent in Bangladesh, is unjustifiably high. Professor Ashraf Chowdhury of Dhaka University advocated for more concrete methods to measure the ability of microfinance to reduce poverty.
