MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Institute of Microfinance (InM) to Pilot Microinsurance Scheme in Bangladesh

The Institute of Microfinance (InM), a Bangladesh-based nonprofit that aims to meet the research and training needs of microfinance institutions (MFIs), has begun a pilot micro health insurance scheme in Bangladesh. The scheme was initiated after a study by InM indicated that the Bangladeshi poverty rate increased three percent annually due to medical spending. The pilot includes two plans: (1) Sushasthya, which includes outpatient services with full maternity and newborn care for BDT 240 (USD 3) per person per year and (2) Surokkha, which includes inpatient and outpatient services with full maternity and newborn care for BTD 384 (USD 4.70) per person per year. The pilot program will last two years and include members of approximately 3,000 households that participate in three unnamed microcredit programs in the cities of Churkhai and Mymensingh.

Green Delta Insurance Company Limited, a Bangladesh-based non-life insurance company, will carry the risk of the microinsurance project.
