MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Grameen Crédit Agricole Microfinance Foundation Loans $800k to Soro Yiriwaso of Mali, Viator of Azerbaijan

The Grameen Credit Agricole Microfinance Foundation (GCAMF), a Luxembourg-based nonprofit that provides financial services to microfinance institutions, recently notified MicroCapital that it has disbursed a one-year loan of USD 396,000 to Mali-based microfinance institution (MFI) Soro Yiriwaso, its third loan to Soro Yiriwaso to date. Implemented by Save the Children USA, a US-based nonprofit organization, Soro Yiriwaso’s mission is to increase opportunities for disadvantaged Malian entrepreneurs, especially women. GCAMF has also disbursed a three-year, USD 396,000 loan to Azerbaijani MFI Viator Microcredit, its third loan to Viator to date.

As of 2011, Soro Yiriwaso reported to the US-based Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) assets of USD 11 million, deposits of USD 1.7 million, 79,000 depositors, a gross loan portfolio of USD 8.7 million and 72,583 active borrowers. For the same year, Viator Microcredit reported to MIX a gross loan portfolio of USD 11.7 million and 17,738 active borrowers. The amount of the company’s total assets is unavailable. Viator Microcredit does not take deposits.

Also as of 2011, GCAMF reported to MIX total assets of EUR 51.1 million (USD 66.2 million) and 45 investment projects in 19 countries that support 30 microfinance institutions (MFIs), four social-business projects and one fund that covers foreign-exchange risk. The Grameen Credit Agricole Microfinance Foundation (GCAMF) was founded in 2008 by Credit Agricole SA, a French retail bank, and Grameen Trust (GT), a nonprofit microfinance organization affiliated with Grameen Bank of Bangladesh.
