MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Global Systems for Mobile Association (GSMA) Launches Code of Conduct for Mobile Money Providers

The Global Systems for Mobile Association (GSMA), a UK-based association of 1,000 mobile operators and associated companies, recently launched a “Code of Conduct for Mobile Money Providers” to provide guidance on best practices for its members. The code focuses on creating standards for fair treatment of customers, reducing the risk of money laundering and terrorism financing, ensuring the reliability of mobile money, creating secure networks and channels, and protecting customer funds. The code was conceived at GSMA’s NFC (Near Field Communication) & Mobile Money Summit that took place in Milan in 2012.

Members of GSMA are not required to endorse the Code of Conduct, but GSMA will provide operational guidance and training programs to the compliance managers of companies that choose to do so. GSMA has secured endorsements from 11 mobile network operators (MNOs) working in 51 countries, including India-based Airtel, Norway-based Telenor and UK-based Vodafone. GSMA plans to implement a more robust certification process in the future.

As of 2014, GSMA’s members include approximately 800 mobile operators and 200 software, mobile, technology, media and entertainment organizations.
