MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Global Human Development Forum to Issue “Istanbul Declaration” on Social Justice Issues to be Raised at United Nations “Rio + 20” Conference on Sustainable Development

The United Nations’ (UN’s) Global Human Development Forum, which has begun in Istanbul, Turkey, will involve the discussion of social justice and environmental protection issues to be negotiated at the UN “Rio + 20” Conference on Sustainable Development, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012. The forum is an initiative of the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Report Office and its Bureau of Development Policy and is co-sponsored by the government of Turkey. Event attendees will release an “Istanbul Declaration” that will list goals and priorities for the conference in June. The forum will assess UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s High Level Panel on Global Sustainability, a group that explores approaches for building a “green” economy that can eradicate poverty. The proposed commitment to new sustainable development goals following the 2015 conclusion of the Millenium Development Goals campaign will also be addressed.

The UN “Rio + 20” Conference on Sustainable Development will take place from June 20 to June 22, 2012, and has the aim of securing political commitment for sustainable development, assessing progress to date and addressing new and emerging challenges in the area. The two themes of the conference will be: (a) a green economy in the contexts of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development. The conference is known as Rio + 20 because it marks the twentieth anniversary of the UN Conference on Environment and Development (Rio-92).
