MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Fondazione Giordano Dell’Amore, European Microfinance Network (EMN) Announce Sixth Edition of $69k Giordano Dell’Amore Microfinance Good Practices Europe Award

The sixth annual edition of the Giordano Dell’Amore Microfinance Good Practices Europe Award, which seeks to recognize best practices in the European microfinance industry, has been announced by Fondazione Giordano Dell’Amore, an Italian foundation that supports microfinance, and the European Microfinance Network (EMN), a Belgium-based NGO that promotes microfinance and self-employment [1]. The theme for the 2013-14 edition of the award is “Employment – challenges and opportunities for microfinance,” a topic that aims to highlight the role of microfinance in job creation.

The deadline for applications, which must be submitted in English, is January 31, 2014. Any European institution or organization that has been involved in providing financial services to those traditionally excluded from such services in the European Union, or in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, are eligible to apply.

The winner, which will be announced at the 11th EMN Annual Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, on June 19 and 20, 2014, will receive EUR 50,000 (USD 69,000) for new or existing projects in Europe.

The winner in 2013 was Saving House Moznosti of the Republic of Macedonia, a microfinance institution (MFI) that supports small businesses.

About European Microfinance Network (EMN): The European Microfinance Network (EMN), a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Belgium, aims to bring together microfinance practitioners and others involved in microfinance activities in Europe with the purpose of promoting best practices in microfinance, self-employment and microentreprise development. It also seeks to improve the regulatory framework for microfinance at the EU and member-state levels. EMN has 99 members and partners located in 21 European countries as of 2013.

About Fondazione Giordano Dell’Amore: Fondazione Giordano Dell’Amore is an Italy-based foundation that was established in 1967. It was formalized under Italian law in 1977 by Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lomabrde, an Italian state-owned bank. As of 2013, the foundation’s mission is to catalyze Italy’s resources in support of the microfinance sector in both industrialized and developing countries. The foundation is a member of Rete Italiana di Microfinanza (RITMI), the Italian microfinance network, and is associated with the European Microfinance Network (EMN), a Belgium-based NGO that promotes microfinance and self-employment.
