The Flat Pyramid, an Indian organization, has been launched with the goal of applying market-based solutions to socio-economic issues. The organization engages in research and consulting, aids organizations in the development of sustainable strategies, seeks to promote policy dialogue and change, and works as an incubation center for socio-economic initiatives. These initiatives include VolunteeRate, which provides “open, free, and objective” ratings for microfinance institutions (MFIs), and EachOneBankOne, which seeks to promote awareness and activism for financial inclusion. Ratings from VolunteeRate are based on factors including financial metrics, corporate governance, regulations and early warning signs of potential problems. EachOneBankOne provides materials promoting the idea that financial inclusion should be a right and provides an avenue for issuing online complaints to the Banking Ombudsman, of the Reserve Bank of India, the country’s central bank.
