MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Fiji Implements Electronic Government-to-Person (G2P) Payment Program, Reports 81% Financial Inclusion Rate

The government of Fiji, through its Department of Social Welfare, is promoting financial inclusion through implementation of an electronic government-to-person (G2P) payment program, which includes access to no-fee bank accounts to previously unbanked recipients. Other goals of the effort are to reduce the labor required to manually process vouchers, as well as to reduce fraud. The new system is based on using magnetic-strip cards for payment. Since implementing the new system, 81 percent of recipients have been enrolled in electronic payment delivery [1].
