MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Daiwa Securities Group of Japan Raises $236m for Retail Microfinance Fund to Be Managed by Developing World Markets (DWM) Asset Management LLC of USA

Daiwa Securities Group Incorporated, a Tokyo-based financial services holding company, recently announced the opening of an investment trust fund in Japan that will invest directly in microfinance institutions (MFIs) in developing countries.

The fund will be sold through a Japanese subsidiary of the group, Daiwa Securities Company Limited, and other unnamed companies starting February 2011. The minimum investment size is set at JPY 1,000 (USD 12).

USD 236 million has so far been raised for the fund according to Kari Filerman, an analyst at Developing World Markets (DWM) Asset Management LLC, a member of Developing World Markets Group, a US-based asset management company that will manage the fund [1].

As of 2010, Daiwa Securities Group Incorporated reported total assets of JPY 16 trillion (USD 195 billion).
