MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Cambodian Microfinance Institution Hattha Kaksekar Launches SmartVista E-Payment Service from BPC

Hattha Kaksekar Limited, a Cambodian microfinance institution (MFI), recently announced its launch of SmartVista, an electronic payments solution created by Banking Production Centre (BPC) Banking Technologies, a mobile technology solutions provider with offices in Asia, Europe, Latin America and Russia. The implementation of SmartVista reportedly will support the MFI’s efforts towards “delivering a wide range of products and services to customers across Cambodia, using a number of channels – including ATMs [automated teller machines], POS [point-of-sale] devices and mobile phones.” SmartVista supports debit and credit cards as well as prepaid and virtual cards. Hattha Kaksekar clients can now access balance inquiries, funds transfers and remittance transactions via ATMs and POS devices, and they can use mobile phones to make payments throughout the country. BPC has also implemented cardless foreign currency exchange via ATMs in Cambodia as well as biometric authentication on ATMs and POS devices to reduce fraud.

As of year-end 2011, Hattha Kaksekar reported to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) total assets of USD 86 million, return on assets (ROA) of 4.5 percent and return on equity (ROE) of 22.4 percent. As of year-end 2012, the MFI reported a gross loan portfolio of USD 102 million and USD 44 million in deposits from 108,000 depositors. Financials for BPC are unavailable.
