According to microfinance industry officials in Cambodia, in the first quarter of 2010, non-performing loan (NPL) rates have remained mostly steady and loan disbursement by microfinance institutions (MFIs) has increased over the fourth quarter 2009. Conversely, net profits at MFIs have declined from the last quarter due to the decline in interest rates and the cost of growing operations, commented the president of the Cambodian Microfinance Association (CMA), Hout Ieng Tong. “This year, it’s expected we’ll see better lending as the economy begins to recover, but we do not expect the NPL rate to drop much,” added Mr Tong.
