MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Call for Papers: Impact and Policy Conference, Bangkok, August 30 to September 1, 2012, Hosted by Asian Development Bank, Innovations for Poverty Action, Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), a US-based nonprofit research organization, has issued a call for papers for researchers interested in having their papers included in the Impact and Policy Conference: Evidence in Governance, Financial Inclusion, and Entrepreneurship to be held in Bangkok August 30 – September 1, 2012. Applicants must submit their completed application with the thematic day for which they are applying: (1) small and medium-sized enterprise development; (2) governance and post-conflict recovery; or (3) financial inclusion. Papers on poverty reduction in China are also welcome. The deadline for submission is June 22, 2012, and accepted applicants will be notified in early July. Researchers chosen to present their papers will receive economy-class airfare and hotel accommodations for the conference.

The Impact and Policy Conference is being hosted by the Asian Development Bank, a development finance institution in the Philippines; IPA; and the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, a network of researchers that aim to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is based on scientific research. The conference will include a matchmaking program to encourage collaboration between researchers and practitioners on joint research projects. Seed funding will be awarded to one partnership at the end of the conference.

About Innovations for Poverty Action
Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a US-based nonprofit organization that uses randomized evaluations to research the impacts of development programs in microfinance, health, agriculture, education, charitable giving and community development. Founded in 2002 by Dean Karlan, an economist at the United States’ Yale University, IPA is part of the Financial Access Initiative (FAI), a consortium launched with the support of a USD 5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with the goal of increasing knowledge about microfinance and communicating relevant research findings. One of IPA’s projects is the Microsavings and Payments Innovation Initiative (MPII), which is intended to generate knowledge, research and infrastructure to disseminate results to the microfinance and development sectors. IPA disclosed approximately USD 25 million in income in 2010.
