MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Base of Pyramid Asia (BOPA) Raises Equity Stake in Alliance for Microfinance in Myanmar (AMFIM) from 33% to 49%

Base of Pyramid Asia (BOPA), a Singapore-based equity investor in small microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Asia, recently purchased an additional equity stake of 16-percent in Alliance for Microfinance in Myanmar (AMFIM), a deposit-taking microfinance institution (MFI) that was launched in Myanmar in 2014. The investment, which was carried an unspecified price, increased BOPA’s equity stake in the MFI to 49 percent.

Christian Andersen, the chief executive officer of BOPA, said that “Alliance management has impressed us with its plan execution in 2015, and we are therefore happy to invest additional equity to help Alliance grow in scale and client outreach”[1].

As of March 31, 2015, AMFIM had approximately USD 92,000 in loans outstanding to 1,200 borrowers and USD 19,000 in deposits collected from 1,230 customers. As of August 30, 2015, BOPA reported total assets of USD 4.4 million and 6 portfolio companies that had an aggregated client outreach of approximately 110,000.
