Vodafone Americas Foundation, a US-based subsidiary of UK-based Vodafone Group, has devised the Wireless Innovation Project, a contest to encourage the implementation of wireless technology to tackle social issues across the globe. Only US-based universities and nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply.
Total prize money of up to USD 600,000 will be awarded to the winners over a period of three years. The contest requires the applicants to submit a business plan by February 3, 2014. The winners will be announced at a public forum in spring 2014.
As of 2013, Vodafone reported revenue of GBP 44.4 billion (USD 69 billion), operating profit of GBP 12 billion (USD 18.7 billion) and a customer base of 403 million people in approximately 80 countries.
