Angkor Mikroheranhvatho Kampuchea Company Limited (AMK), a deposit-taking microfinance institution (MFI) in Cambodia, has been awarded the second Giordano Dell’Amore Microfinance Best Practices International Award 2011 by the Italian foundation Fondazione Giordano Dell’Amore [1].

AMK, established in 1999, aims to “help poor people to improve their livelihood options through the delivery of appropriate and viable microfinance services.” It was granted a deposit-taking license in 2010. The products offered by AMK include credit, saving and inter-branch transfer. As of 2010, AMK reported to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) total assets of USD 43.9 million, a gross loan portfolio of USD 31.7 million, approximately 251,300 borrowers, return on assets (ROA) of 1.90 percent and return on equity (ROE) of 6.86 percent.

The Giordano Dell’Amore Microfinance Best Practices International Award aims to increase the understanding of microfinance as a tool to fight poverty, promote social inclusion and encourage microfinance practitioners to share successful practices. The focus of the award for 2011 was “transparency, client protection and social impact,” and it was presented during the “Present and Future of Microfinance: Transparency, Client Protection and Social Impact for a Sustainable Growth” Conference hosted by Fondazione Giordano Dell’Amore on October 24 in Italy. Fundación Pro Vivienda Social, a microfinance and infrastructure development nonprofit in Argentina, was the recipient of the first edition of the award in 2009.
