MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: 9th Annual Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Participants Commit to Advancing 15,000 Women-owned Businesses by 2018

The 2013 Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), an annual meeting that brings together global leaders in an effort to address international problems, was held September 23-26 and focused on ways that CGI members can mobilize people to action to solve world problems [1]. Approximately 160 new commitments were made by CGI member organizations that are expected to help 22.2 million people. WEConnect International, a US-based nonprofit focused on women’s empowerment through business education and certification; Accenture, a US-based consulting firm; Walmart, a multinational retail corporation; Ernst & Young, a London-based financial services firm; DLA Piper, a US-based law firm; Cherie Blair Foundation for Women; Pfizer Inc., a US-based pharmaceutical corporation; McLarty Associates, a US-based strategic advisory firm; Vital Voices Global Partnership, a US-based NGO that works with women leaders on economic development issues; International Center for Research on Women and U.S. Department of State; announced a commitment to spend USD 1.5 billion through donations and purchases from 15,000 non US-based, women-owned businesses by 2018. Other commitments include saving the African elephants from poaching, eliminating gender-based violence in Haiti through technical assistance and medical training, and empowering girls in West Bengal by securing land rights.

CGI members have made approximately 2,300 commitments, which when fully implemented will be valued at approximately USD 73.5 billion as of 2012.
