WASHINGTON, December 19 – The Microfinance Information eXchange (MIX) released its second annual “MIX Global 100: Rankings of Microfinance Institutions,” a ranking of the top performing microfinance institutions throughout the developing world. The rankings, which are based on data from MIX’s publicly available microfinance database, were presented by Executive Director Peter Wall from MIX at a luncheon in New York held in association with Deutsche Bank.

The MIX Global 100 ranks microfinance institutions in seven different categories, as well as in an overall composite ranking. The MIX Global 100: Composite rankings are based on a number of criteria and were developed in an effort to present the leading, most well-rounded and balanced high performing institutions. The individual MIX Global 100 categories are: Outreach (borrowers and depositors), Scale, Profitability, Efficiency, Productivity and Portfolio Quality.

“The composite rankings bring into focus a more complete view of microfinance providers and the variety of factors that impact their continued ability to provide financial services to the world’s poor,” stated Peter Wall, executive director of MIX. “We hope that these rankings will serve to answer some questions about microfinance, as well as further the conversation about creating sustainable microfinance institutions.”

The MIX Global 100 Composite ranks Zakoura from Morocco as the top performing MFI. Sabaragamuwa in Sri Lanka is number 2; with Al Amana, also of Morocco; Grama Vidiyal (GV) of India and ProCredit Bank of Serbia rounding out the top 5. The ten highest ranking microfinance institutions in the MIX Global 100 Composite are from all regions of the developing, with four of the top 10 microfinance institutions located in India. Nine of the top ten are either non governmental organizations (NGOs) or non bank institutions (NBFI), with only one commercial bank – ProCredit Bank of Serbia – placing in the top ten.

Two other documents related to the report can be found here: the presentation outlining the methodologies, and the composite rankings in an excel spreadsheet.
